2017mazdacx3475When the CX-3 was introduced in 2016 it was a hit. Keeping with the old adage “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” nothing much has changed in 2017, the Mazda CX-3 still delivers the most fun in a Subcompact SUV package.

Using KODO-Soul of Motion, the CX-3′s design is fluid and sporty. The engine is one of the best with Mazda’s Skyativ technology that takes the basic internal combustion engine and elevates it into something more efficient. It’s genius really, Mazda took every part of the gas engine and tweaked it into a more-efficient machine.

2017mazdacx3intThe Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact SUV that comes in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. This review will focus on the Grand Touring trim.

The top-level CX-3 Grand Touring includes leather and Lux Suede seats, LED headlights with Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), LED fog lights, navigation, automatic climate control, paddle shifters and Active Driving Display head-up unit that helps keep a driver’s eyes focused on the road. This is in addition to power mirrors, cloth seats, a seven-inch MAZDA CONNECT touchscreen infotainment system with voice commands, Bluetooth phone connectivity for phone and audio streaming, a USB input, keyless entry, push-button start, power door locks, a BOSE seven-speaker audio system, power moonroof, satellite radio, HD radio and a cargo cover.

A stand-alone option (included on my test model) is the i-ACTIVSENSE package includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), automatic Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) and Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), High Beam Control (HBC), automatic on/off headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

A 146-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine powers the CX-3 along with a six-speed automatic transmission. Mileage estimates come in at 29/city, 34/highway and 31/combined mpg.

The CX-3 scored 5 out of 5 stars in all government crash test but for rollover where is scored 4 out of 5 stars.

2017mazdacx3trunkWith it’s leather/Lux Suede seats and top dash-mounted infotainment screen the interior of the CX3 is nice to look at and easy to use. Seating is comfortable fore and aft and you won’t hear any complaints about headroom. Cargo space is a bit cramped due to the CX3′s smaller size holding 12.4 cubic feet of cargo with the back seats up and 44.5 feet with them down.

The CX-3 is as much fun to drive as it is to look at. With agile steering and zippy engine, the CX-3 is at home on the road as well as more-challenging terrain. The cabin is quiet too, with a minimum of road noise even at higher speeds.

Need a small SUV with some style? Give the 2017 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring a test drive.
