2018 Fiat 500X Pop: Zippy Passenger Version of Fiat 500

2018fiat500x475There’s no doubt that the Fiat 500 is a cute car, but it is not exactly roomy. One or two people can get by traveling around in the 500 but add a third or a fourth passenger and you can forget about it. Enter the 500X. A larger more roomy version of the 500, it offers more passenger and cargo space than its diminutive cousin.

2018fiat500xdashSome new standard features are offered for 2018: a rearview camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a new 7-inch touchscreen with the most recent version of the Uconnect infotainment system. This makes the 500X even more appealing.

The subcompact crossover, Fiat 500X is available in three trims: Pop, Trekking and Lounge. This review will focus on the Pop trim with Front Wheel Drive.

The Pop trim is the entry trim but it is still loaded with goodies like full power accessories, heated mirrors, remote locking and unlocking, a rearview camera, cruise control, air conditioning, a driver information display, height-adjustable front seats, a fold-flat front passenger seat, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker sound system with a USB port and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Because my Pop was equipped with the larger engine (it comes standard with a 1.4-liter engine) it also included remote engine start, a center armrest, and keyless entry and ignition. My model also included optional equipment of the Popular Equipment package, which adds alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, front and rear floor mats,a center armrest, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio and an additional USB port.

2018fiat500xseatsThe optional 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with the optional 9 speed automatic transmission (the Pop comes standard with a manual transmission), helped my Pop to sail along the road with 180 horses and 175 lb-ft of torque. Expect to get 22/city, 30/highway, and 25/combined mpg.

With an attractive and easy to use dash, the interior of the 500x is a nice place to be, at least for front seat passengers. Backseat passengers may find it a bit cramped if the people up front are taller. Engine noise is minimal, all the better to enjoy the great stereo system.

There are plenty of little bins and cubbies to carry small items but the back cargo area is pretty small. The 60/40 split rear seats helps with that and so does the movable floor cover in the rear which can be lowered to accommodate larger items.

Driving around town in the 500X is fun. Its zippy engine provides good bursts of power when needed. The ride is a bit stiff, but that adds to the sporty feel.

Love the idea of a Fiat but need some extra room? Give the 2018 Fiat 500X Pop a test drive.
