2018toyotayaris475Sometimes you need a car to get around while only spending a few dimes. Of course it would be great if that car could come with some of the latest goodies and gadgets. The search is over, the 2018 Toyota Yaris SE is not only competitively priced but it also has a lot of the extras you desire.

The Yaris comes in two body styles (two or four doors) and three trims: L, LE, and SE. This review focuses on the four door SE trim.

2018toyotayarisintThe SE trim comes standard with extras like: 16-inch alloy wheels, projector-beam headlights, LED running lights, foglights, special exterior styling elements, four-wheel disc brakes, a larger 7-inch touchscreen, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and upgraded cloth upholstery.

A 1.5-liter four-banger delivers 106 horses and 103 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission makes everything mesh. Expect to get 30/city, 35/highway and 32/combined mpg.

Materials on the interior are about what you would expect of a inexpensive subcompact with lots of hard plastics and a tinny sounds when the doors are shut. But the placement of the instruments and ease of use somewhat makes up for the lack of style. Head and legroom is plentiful in both the front and back seats. However, the middle backseat is pretty useless with two adults in the back. The trunk provides 15.6 cubic feet which is plenty for groceries.

Acceleration on the Yaris is about what you would expect of a subcompact: it will get you there but not with any alacrity. Steering is firm and true even at freeway speeds. If you live in the city you’ll find the Yaris easy to park which is always a plus.

Looking for a starter car or just want to reduce your footprint? Give the 2018 Toyota Yaris SE a test drive.
