2018 Volkswagen Passat GT: Sportingly Practical

2018vwpassatgt475Many years have passed since the last major update of the Passat, (six), but when choosing a practical sedan for commutes and family road trips the Passat still fits the bill. A new GT trim was introduced for 2018 with a larger V6 engine, 19-inch wheels and sport-tuned suspension which this review will focus on.

The Passat is available in six trims S, R-Line, SE, SE with Technology, GT, and SEL Premium. This review will only focus on the GT trim.

Sporting 19-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, sport front seats and two-tone simulated leather upholstery, it is apparent from the get-go that the GL is all about sports and speed. Additional equipment like a 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, VW’s Car-Net smartphone integration, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision warning make the Passat GT safe and easy to operate.

2018vwpassatgtintThe V6 engine gives the GT zip with 280 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is paired with the V6. Expect to get 19/city, 28/highway, and 22/combined mpg.

A very roomy interior greets the driver and passengers, both front and back. No one will feel cramped or claustrophobic while traveling in the Passat GT. A simple interface for technology is used for all but the basic climate control and stereo functions. A large trunk makes transporting stuff easy with 15.5 cubic feet and a 60/40 split backseat.

With its six cylinder engine, acceleration in the GT is quick and cornering is true. The ride in the GT is cushy even with its performance suspension and the cabin noise is kept to a murmur.

Want a sedan with a punch, then give the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT V6 a test drive.
