2019 Buick EncoreBy now everyone knows that the Buick badge has reinvented itself into something more than the old-fogey cars they used to be. Today’s Buick is sleek and modern with all the amenities. The 2019 Buick Encore is no different. This subcompact crossover has plenty of standard tech and safety features, but in a size that makes more sense in a suburban setting. It still retains the Buick’s signature quiet cabin which is achieved with special glass in the windows and sound-deadening material under the floor. With all the noise and activity going on all the time, it’s nice to drive in relative quite, with the sound system playing your favorite song.

Offered in four trim levels: 1SV, Preferred, Sport Touring and Essence, this review will focus on the top of the line Essence trim.

Special features of the Essence trim are: LED headlights, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, driver-seat memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, a 120-volt household-style power outlet, and the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems.

2019 Buick EncoreThere are optional packages offered with the Essence trim which were included on my test model: Safety Package II which includes automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and an advanced cabin filter. My model also included the optional Moonroof, navigation system and premium Bose seven-speaker sound system.

Powered with the optional more powerful turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine the Encore pulls 153 horses and 177 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission makes everything mesh together smoothly. Expect to get 26/city, 31/highway, and 28/combined mpg.

On the inside, the cabin is nicely appointed with good finish and materials. The seats are comfy and there is plenty of room in the front seats. Back seats are not quite as roomy and are best suited for two passengers instead of three.

The center stack is straightforward and easy to use with a touchscreen and plenty of backup buttons and knobs. The Encore has a Wi-Fi hotspot which is helpful when traveling for passengers to work or play with their smart devices. There are two USB ports and a 12-volt power outlet in the front and a single 12-volt outlet in the back.

The peppy turbocharged engine gives the car plenty of get up and go around town and also on the highway. Steering feels steady and cornering is good.

Want to drive a car with a whisper-quiet interior? Give the 2019 Buick Encore Essence a test drive.
