2019toyotacorolla475With a history of reliability and economy is it any wonder that Toyota has chosen to keep the 2019 Corolla as-is instead of doing a complete reboot? Holding steady with its roomy interior, comfortable seating and well-equipped models, the 2019 Toyota Corolla is a great choice for a compact car.

Available in six trim levels: L, LE, LE Eco, SE, XSE, and XLE there are many configurations to personalize the Corolla. This review will focus on the XSE trim level.

The sporty model, the XSE comes equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, unique front-end styling, a rear spoiler, steering-wheel paddle shifters (for automatic transmission), sport front seats, SofTex upholstery with cloth inserts, and a sport-style gauge cluster. Also included are the upgraded headlights, bumper-mounted LED daytime running lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and power driver’s seat.

2019toyotacorollaintPowered with a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine, the Corolla produces 132 horses with 128 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission was equipped on my test model, but there is also a manual transmission available on the SE and XSE trim. Expect to get 28/city, 35/highway, and 31/combined mpg.

The roomy interior is one of the Corolla’s outstanding features. Drivers and passengers will find plenty of leg and headroom and you won’t be knocking elbows. The instrument panel is simple and straight-forward with easy to reach knobs and a logic touchscreen interface.

With 13 cubic feet of space, the trunk is relatively small, but the wide opening and 60/40 split rear seats helps with transporting longer cargo.

Taking to the road, the Corolla certainly won’t make any speed records, but its acceleration is smooth and putting it into Sports mode gives it an extra boost. Steering is agile around town and really shines when at higher speeds. There is a minimum amount of road noise in the cabin, even at higher speeds.

Need a reliable compact car that has stayed the course? Give the 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE a test drive.
