2019volkswagenalltrack475When I was a kid if you had a big family you drove a station wagon. Now SUVs and Crossovers seem to be the norm. But what if you want the room but would like it in a more manageable size and with some off-road capabilities? Enter the 2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.

Using the Golf SportWagen as its base, the Alltrack adds to the length, for more cargo space, and gives it more ground clearance for light off-road driving. For 2019, the Alltrack adds some new standard driver safety features and a manual transmission for all trim levels.

Available in three trim levels: S, SE, and SEL, this review will focus on the SE trim. The SE combines the best of the lower trims like roof rails, heated seats and side mirrors, a rearview camera, Bluetooth and smartphone integration, with a big sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, and a better sound system.

2019volkswagenalltrackintPowering the Alltrack is VW’s reliable 1.8-liter, four-banger engine with a turbocharger delivering 168 horses and 199 pound-feet of torque. My model was equipped with the optional six-speed automatic transmission. Expect to get 22/city, 30/highway and 25/combined mpg.

The cockpit of the Alltrack is as user-friendly as it gets with a simple set up of knobs and buttons and the touchscreen is easy to use. There are a lot of hard plastics in the cabin but they are arranged in an attractive manner. Front seats are comfy as are the backseats, however if a taller driver racks the front seat back, back passengers will suffer with tight legroom.

With 30.4 cubic feet of cargo space, there’s plenty there for weekend treks and grocery trips. Fold the back seats down and there’s a whopping 66.5 cubic feet, plenty for long sports equipment or DYI trips.

The Alltrack isn’t exactly nimble in acceleration but it will get you to where you want to go. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and steering is responsive. It’s an all around easy city driving car.

Looking for a passenger vehicle that isn’t a crossover? Take a look at the 2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.
