2018toyotarav4hybrid475The compact crossover segment is a full one. It takes a lot for a model to stand out. The 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid does so by virtue of its excellent gas mileage. Add to that the large, comfortable interior, quick acceleration and standard safety features, and the RAV4 Hybrid looks pretty good.

There’s not much new for 2018 except the addition of the LE base trim and a bit more ground clearance to the SE trim.

With seating for five, the RAV4 Hybrid comes in four trim levels: LE, XLE, SE, and Limited. This review will focus on the XLE trim.

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine plus three electric motors (one powers vehicle systems, one powers front wheels and one powers rear wheels) delivers 194 horses. The car is equipped with a CVT (continuous variable transmission). Expect to get 34/city, 30/highway, and 32/combined mpg.

The interior of the RAV4 Hybrid has a lot of hard plastic surfaces, so it feels a bit cheap. The cloth seats in the XLE are comfortable and the driver’s side has many of comfort adjustments. Both front and back seat passengers will feel plenty comfortable with lots of head and legroom even for taller adults. Cargo space is great with 35.6 cubic feet with the back seats up and 70.6 with them down.

Driving the RAV4 Hybrid is a pleasure with good acceleration due to the power provided by the battery and electric motors. As with most Hybrids braking is grabby so be forewarned. Steering is tight and the RAV4 corners very well for such a heavy car.

Need a family car but want to leave a smaller footprint? Try out the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE.
