Mike Kefalas at JK Volvo tells us that becoming aware of the warning signs that something is wrong with your car is the first step needed to ensure this never happens to you. So if you start to see some of these signs, take your car to to the shop and make sure that you won’t end up sitting alongside a road somewhere hoping your cell phone has enough signal.

One of those things that can cause you grief when it goes bad is the alternator. The alternator powers the car’s electrical systems, and also allows the battery to recharge. When it starts to fail, a whole host of problems begin to show up. This can include a warning light appearing on your dashboard, dim or flickering headlights, air conditioning and window failures, bizarre rattling noises, and a general difficulty in starting.

This video explains a little more about the power of the alternator:

It’s a long list, but the longer the list the better your chance of noticing the problem before it’s too late. If you notice any of these things, don’t ignore them. Instead, take your car to a great mechanic like Mike at JK Volvo and let their professionals help you out.

When you arrive, tell them exactly what you’ve noticed so that they have a good idea of where the problem lies. They may notice, for instance, that there is a fluid leak causing your alternator to wear out before its time and they might need to put a fix on that issue as well to fix the problem.

Once the experts at have determined that the problem is definitely your alternator, they may need to replace it. Without warranty this will often cost between $300 and $500 for a remanufactured alternator with the price including all the parts and the labor.

However, if your vehicle requires a brand new alternator, the price can shoot up to $1,000. The majority of alternators today come with a warranty lasting between one and three years. Some even come with a lifetime warranty. The helpful people at JK Volvo can let you know which warranty you’ve got, and give you tips on how to prolong the life of your alternator.

No matter the cost, replacement is always better than being stranded, having to arrange for a tow truck, and taking the chance that the mechanic you’re stuck with will properly fix your car.

When it comes to cars, it’s easy to bury your head in the sand. But a quick trip to an expert mechanics at JK Volvo will save you a whole lot of time and headaches in the future, and help ensure that you will never be left stranded in the middle of nowhere.
