No matter how much you think you know about cars, unless you are a professional with all the testing equipment at your disposal and years of experience to guide you through those shark infested waters.

According to our friends at JK Volvo, the first thing you need to do before even stepping onto the forecourt is research. And lots of it. Figure out what you want and need from a car then see if you can find a vehicle that matches that description. Don’t ever be pressured to buy from a salesperson. Remember that this car is likely to last you a while so you want to make sure that it’s really the one.

It’s also a good idea not to be pushed into a certain price – even if you really want the car. Set a price range before you visit a dealership and keep it to yourself until the seller reveals their price. That way, you will be able to negotiate much more successfully.

JK Volvo also tells us that you’ll want to run a Carfax report before walking (or driving) away with the car. These reports tell you the history of the car including whether it’s been in any accidents.

After, make sure you test drive the car on a range of road types to check that everything seems perfectly fine. Then, you’ll want to get it inspected by JK Volvo. Although you can take a look under the hood yourself, you won’t know what to look for and whether there is any hidden damage buried elsewhere. Yes, it’ll come you a little extra money but it’s worth it.

An inspection by JK Volvo will usually only take about an hour and will be able to detect any problems with the vehicle including frame and engine damage and any shoddy repair work. If there are sufficient problems, it’s obviously better to walk away. But if the problems are more minor, you could negotiate a lower price with the dealer.

If you’re thinking about buying a secondhand car, visit JK Volvo before making the final decision. The last thing you want to do is leave with a pile of junk on your hands.
